17.2.3 Model of a logical topology

Besides the physical connections, there are logical connections between devices, see Fig. 17-4.

In industrial communication networks controllers often interact with peripheral or field devices. Traditionally this is done via the same wired or wireless connection. But from logical perspective, this interaction between the controller and one field device in the same communication network is independent of the interaction between the same controller and other field devices. The structure of the logical connections in an industrial communication networks looks very similar to the physical network. The logical topology contains at least on logical connection connects with at least two logical endpoints. In contrast to the physical endpoint, a role of the logical endpoint can be defined. Typical examples are the combinations Master/Slave, Producer/Consumer, Client/ Server or Publisher/Subscriber. Such a role can be defined as human readable string.
